At present, the relatively high cost of initial installation of LED lighting sources limits its promotion. However, some of its other features make up for the lack of initial installation costs. These features include low energy consumption, long working life, good durability, low heat generation, improved volume safety, and simple and precise control.

In addition, the cost of LED lighting sources is rapidly declining, and the demand for high-brightness LED lighting sources continues to increase. It is estimated that in 2010, it will have a market share of more than 8 billion US dollars, more than double the number in 2005. Compared with traditional illumination sources, because of the low cost and higher luminous intensity of high-brightness LEDs, accuracy, luminous efficiency and intermittent operation capability will be the main features of the LED IC control scheme.

Intermittent work capability requires switching power supply technology to achieve the potential efficiency of high-brightness LEDs. The IC industry has adopted a variety of PWM controllers to design special circuits for LED drive and control. Many semiconductor suppliers offer corresponding control ICs or driver circuits, such as the MXHV9910 from Micronix (an IXYS company). The internal block diagram is shown in Figure 1. One of the most attractive features of this controller is that it has an internal voltage regulator that directly inputs the high voltage, eliminating the need for an external low-voltage supply circuit with a step-down resistor or high-voltage current source, while reducing cost.
