In the current Chinese auto market, the trend of consumption and product upgrades has become increasingly evident. Many best-selling models have taken advantage of product replacements to enhance their features—such as more powerful engines, luxurious interiors, and improved comfort. Naturally, these improvements come with a price increase, sometimes even pushing the model into a higher price range that wasn't previously covered by its predecessors.
After such price hikes, some popular cars left gaps in their original pricing segments. For car manufacturers, losing this market share is not an option. However, with new models already launched and prices officially announced, how can they fill the void?
Buick introduced the Buick GL6, a new entry aimed at the home MPV segment. The brand has long been recognized for its expertise in MPVs. From the initial release, the GL6 has shown great potential, offering a fresh and user-friendly experience.
Visually, the GL6 makes a strong first impression. It features the latest Buick design language, including the waterfall grille and the flying wing logo, giving it a youthful and stylish look. The body lines are smooth and dynamic, while the floating roof adds a touch of elegance. The rear design exudes a warm and inviting feel, with uniquely shaped taillights that complement the overall style. In short, the GL6 radiates a sense of family-oriented comfort.
In terms of dimensions, the GL6 measures 4692mm in length, 1794mm in width, and 1626mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2796mm. These dimensions place it well within the home MPV segment. However, the focus isn’t just on size—it also offers flexible and intelligent space arrangements, designed to meet the diverse needs of families.
Under the hood, the GL6 is equipped with Buick’s newly developed 1.3T turbocharged engine. While the power output may not be the strongest, it offers good value for money. This engine is comparable to the Touran, but it still falls short of the expectations set by the Angkewei's 1.5T engine.
Currently, the Baojun 730 dominates the domestic MPV market due to its affordability. However, joint-venture MPVs like the Touran have struggled to gain traction, prompting manufacturers to lower prices in an attempt to boost sales. Still, many consumers find prices above 130,000 RMB too high. Although the home MPV market hasn’t fully matured yet, it's clear that this is the direction the industry is heading.
That’s why the timing for the Buick GL6 is perfect. If priced competitively—especially below the Touran—it could dominate the joint-venture MPV market. Should that happen, the Touran might find itself in a tough spot.
