Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. develops low-permeability packaging materials for high-brightness LED packaging

As a silicon packaging material for high-brightness LED packaging, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. has developed a new low-refractive-index product "KER-7000 Series" that reduces gas permeability. The new product is available in "KER-7080 A/B" with a Shore A hardness of 80 and "KER-7030 A/B" with a Shore A hardness of 30. Samples will be supplied for lighting LEDs.
It has been pointed out that in a gas-permeable packaging material, gas such as oxygen is easily invaded, so that oxidation and vulcanization reactions occur in the peripheral parts of the LED, which may cause a decrease in brightness.
Shin-Etsu Chemical has previously developed methyl silicon, which is excellent in heat resistance, and encapsulating materials such as phenyl silicon, which is low in gas permeability (Fig. 2).
The new product developed this time, while maintaining the same level of heat resistance as methyl silicon, also reduced the gas permeability to about 1/10 of methyl silicon. In addition, the new product has the same gas permeability as phenyl silicon, but greatly improves heat resistance. The KER-7000 series is used as a packaging material to prevent the brightness from being lowered due to corrosion of the peripheral parts, which helps to improve the reliability of high-brightness LEDs. In addition, the product's refractive index is 1.38, lower than methyl silicon, such excellent light transmission is particularly suitable for high-brightness LED flat package.
