Unique DSP core + OTP depth dimming curve adjustment

Marvell's new highly integrated 88EM8183 LED driver IC for the LED lighting market uses Marvell's unique mixed-signal architecture and advanced dimming control technology to deliver high-quality light output with dimming performance comparable to incandescent. Deep dimming down to 1% of LED current is smoothly achieved, compared to similar LED driver solutions that typically only achieve 10% to 20% dimming. With this amplitude dimming, the human eye does not feel a great change in light intensity, so the 88EM8183 significantly improves performance.

The so-called hybrid architecture is that each chip has a DSP core inside, which can solidify the algorithm. In addition to the DSP core, there is an OTP inside the chip to store a small number of parameter values, and the dimming curve can be adjusted according to different needs.

Lance revealed: "At the time we originally designed the chip, it was based on the National Electrical Manufacturers Association SSL 6 (NEMA SSL 6) dimming standard. In this standard, there is no definition of the dimming curve, but a range is defined. There is a curve in the middle of this range, the requirement is that it is best to match the incandescent curve. The measure we take is to adjust the linearity of the dimming to the incandescent curve by combining the built-in OTP and the external DIM resistor. This can be very deep (as low as 1%), compared to similar LED driver solutions that typically only achieve 10% to 20% dimming. So this curve is quite good."

88EM8183 is compatible with over 110 different LED dimmers

Consumers are using LED energy-saving lamps to replace traditional lighting solutions such as incandescent lamps, while also hoping for the same or better lighting experience.
