This paper presents a fully automatic Abbe refractometer and introduces a calibration method that involves analyzing the instrument's performance using a series of sucrose solutions combined with spreadsheet functions in a computer. The results demonstrate that the performance of this new instrument is superior to that of traditional Abbe refractometers.
**Experimental Method**
In this experiment, 1.0 g, 2.0 g, 3.0 g, 4.0 g, and 5.0 g of analytically pure sucrose were weighed into five small beakers. Then, 24 g, 23 g, 22 g, 21 g, and 20 g of purified water were added by weight to each beaker, respectively. After shaking the mixtures thoroughly, they were transferred into 25 mL colorimetric tubes.
The refractometer used in this study was the ATAGO Automatic Refractometer, model RX-5000a. Before starting the measurements, the instrument was preheated for 20 minutes and then zeroed using distilled water. A single drop of the test solution was placed on the detection window using a Pasteur pipette, the window was covered, and the START button was pressed.
