STM32F401 MCU integrates Movea's SmartMotion technology

STMicroelectronics (ST) and Movea, a leader in consumer electronics data fusion processing technology, have announced that ST has embedded Movea’s SmartMotion technology into the STM32F401 microcontroller. This integration is designed to serve as a low-power sensor hub controller, enabling more efficient motion sensing and context-aware applications in mobile devices. By incorporating Movea’s advanced motion processing algorithms into the STM32F401, device manufacturers and developers can now deliver more accurate and intelligent features like pedestrian navigation, activity tracking, and real-time motion monitoring. The STM32F401 combines high-performance computing with energy-efficient design, while Movea’s motion recognition capabilities offer an ultra-low-power solution ideal for always-on applications. Michel Buffa, General Manager of ST’s Microcontroller Products Division, emphasized that the integration of Movea’s IP into the STM32F401 allows sensor data fusion to be handled directly by the microcontroller, rather than the main application processor. This shift not only reduces system power consumption but also opens up new possibilities for smart mobile devices, making them more responsive and efficient. Leveraging ST’s low-power manufacturing process along with Movea’s industry-leading motion processing, the STM32F401 brings significant advantages to the mobile and tablet markets. For instance, fitness tracking apps can run continuously without draining the battery, and context-aware features can adapt to user behavior, location, and environment. With 80% of users spending most of their time indoors, accurate indoor navigation and activity tracking are becoming increasingly important. The integration of Movea’s firmware into the STM32F401 sensor management platform enables devices to anticipate user needs and provide personalized services. Imagine a phone that unlocks itself through gestures or automatically launches an app based on your current activity. These innovations are made possible by Movea’s walking dead reckoning algorithm, which offers precise indoor navigation with minimal power usage. Movea’s sensor hub solutions include comprehensive software, firmware, and development tools, allowing for advanced motion recognition. By collecting data from accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, and pressure sensors, the STM32F401 can support features like auto-calibration, 3D orientation, gesture detection, and activity tracking. These enhancements are compatible with both Android and Windows platforms. Sam Guilaume, CEO of Movea, stated that this collaboration between ST and Movea is driving innovation in the smart device market. He noted that the STM32F401’s balanced performance and low power consumption make it a strong foundation for next-generation sensor hub solutions. Movea looks forward to continuing its partnership with industry leaders to expand the potential of mobile technology. The STM32F401 family is designed for mobile devices that require a balance of performance and power efficiency. It comes in a compact 3 x 3 mm package, offering high memory capacity and a wide range of peripheral interfaces. Powered by an 84 MHz ARM Cortex-M4 core and ST’s ART™ memory accelerator interface, the STM32F401 delivers exceptional performance in a small form factor. With SmartMotion technology integrated, the STM32F401 will be available in Q4 2013, providing developers with powerful tools to create smarter, more efficient mobile experiences.
