According to a recent report from Mames Consulting, Stanford University School of Medicine has partnered with Apple, the leading US technology company, to utilize the built-in sensors in the Apple Watch for monitoring users' heart rhythms. This collaboration aims to investigate whether such technology can serve as an early warning system for heart conditions like atrial fibrillation. In a press release issued on the same day, Stanford revealed that they will use the Apple Watch's sensors to gather data on irregular heart rhythms. The sensor located at the back of the watch uses green LEDs and photodiodes that flash hundreds of times per second to detect blood flow through the wrist, collecting signals from four different points on the user’s wrist for more accurate readings. On the same day, Apple also launched specialized software designed to analyze the data collected by the Apple Watch. This tool helps differentiate between normal heartbeats and other "noises" or irregularities, allowing the system to identify potential issues like arrhythmias. If an anomaly is detected, the user will receive a notification on both their Apple Watch and iPhone. Stanford University School of Medicine is now exploring how this system could be used to prevent atrial fibrillation, a condition that increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. In the U.S., atrial fibrillation leads to around 130,000 deaths annually and over 750,000 hospitalizations. Many patients remain undiagnosed because the condition often presents no obvious symptoms. Lloyd Miner, Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, emphasized that this study could mark the beginning of a new era in personalized healthcare. By leveraging wearable technology like the Apple Watch Heart Rhythm Sensor, the project highlights the growing role of digital tools in proactive health management and early disease detection.
