The 3GPP Technical Specification Group (TSG) Wireless Access Network (RAN) General Assembly took place today in Lisbon, Portugal. During the event, MediaTek, along with leading global technology and telecom companies, announced the successful completion of the first version of the 5G New Radio (NR) standard. This achievement is a crucial step in the global 5G standardization process, paving the way for large-scale trials and commercial deployment of 5G networks across the world in early 2019.

Industry leaders from around the world attended the event, including AT&T, BT, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, Korea Telecom, LG Electronics, NEC, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung, Sony Mobile Communications, Sprint, Telecom Italia (TIM), Telefonica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, and ZTE.
Members of the 3GPP standards organization consist of top mobile communication industry players. At the MWC conference in Barcelona on February 27, they all pledged full support for accelerating the 5G NR standardization timeline. Following this, the 3GPP meeting was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia on March 9, where participants agreed to fast-track the standard-setting process and include the first edition of the 5G NR standard in the 3GPP Release 15 specification.
In recent years, MediaTek has significantly increased its investment in R&D and technical standards for 5G. The company has secured key roles in various industry groups, such as vice chair of the 3GPP working group, Rapporteur, GTI 5G Sub-6GHz project lead, and chairman of the Taiwan Industry Standards Association.
These key milestones in 5G collaboration with global telecom and technology leaders will enable all parties to develop 5G NR more efficiently, enhancing the capabilities of 3GPP systems and opening up new opportunities in vertical markets.
