MediaTek has played a significant role in the development of 5G new technologies and technical standards, and has been recognized as a key player in major industry organizations. The company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) emphasized that the completion of the first 5G standard by 3GPP marks a major milestone in the journey toward full 5G commercialization. Looking ahead, the focus will shift to developing practical and scalable commercial solutions that can fully unlock the potential of 5G New Radio (NR).
The 3GPP Technical Specification Group (TSG) Wireless Access Network (RAN) General Assembly recently took place in Lisbon, Portugal. During the event, MediaTek joined leading global technology and telecom companies in announcing the successful completion of the first version of the 5G New Radio (NR) standard. This achievement is a critical step in the 5G standardization process, paving the way for large-scale trials and commercial deployment of 5G networks across the world, expected to begin in early 2019.

Dr. Zhou Yujun, Senior Deputy General Manager and CTO of MediaTek, stated, "The completion of the first 5G standard by 3GPP is a crucial milestone on the path to 5G commercialization. As one of the main contributors to the 5G standard, MediaTek remains committed to driving its evolution in the future. As the standard continues to mature, our focus will gradually shift toward delivering commercial solutions that enable 5G to reach its full potential across various applications."
The event in Lisbon brought together industry leaders from around the world, including AT&T, BT, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, Korea Telecom, LG Electronics, NEC, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung, Sony Mobile Communications, Sprint, Telecom Italia (TIM), Telefónica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, and ZTE.
As a member of the 3GPP standards development organization, MediaTek continues to strengthen its involvement in shaping the future of 5G. In recent years, the company has increased its investment in R&D and technical standards, securing key positions in various groups, such as vice chair of the 3GPP working group, Rapporteur, GTI 5G Sub-6GHz project lead, and chairman of the Taiwan-based Industry Standards Association.
With these milestones achieved through collaboration with global telecom and tech leaders, all parties are now better positioned to develop 5G NR efficiently and cost-effectively. This progress not only enhances the capabilities of 3GPP systems but also opens up new opportunities in various vertical markets, from smart cities to industrial automation and beyond.
