According to recent reports from foreign media outlet InsideEVs, Audi Sport, the high-performance division of Audi, has expressed plans to introduce fully electric performance vehicles in the near future. These models are expected to hit the market between 2020 and 2025. Under the leadership of former head of Audi Sport, Stephan Winkelmann, the company appears to be leaning heavily towards developing all-electric vehicles rather than plug-in hybrid options. When discussing potential prototypes for future electric performance offerings, Winkelmann mentioned that the focus would likely be on SUVs and four-door sedans, rather than a pure electric supercar. The primary reason for this decision lies in the physical constraints of electric vehicles. The battery packs and powertrain components require significant space, making it impractical to fit these elements into the compact design typically associated with supercars.
Winkelmann noted, "Between 2020 and 2025, Audi will start moving toward electrification. However, our initial step won't involve creating an electric version of a car like the R8. Instead, we'll prioritize efforts on SUVs or four-door sedans, ensuring these zero-emission models deliver performance that rivals their gasoline counterparts—both in terms of battery-pack packaging and cabin space, as well as horsepower-to-weight ratios." Last year, despite discontinuing the R8 e-tron due to low sales (fewer than 100 units), Audi remains committed to advancing its electric vehicle lineup. This bold move reflects the brand's long-term ambition to innovate within the EV space. For now, enthusiasts can look forward to what Audi Sport has in store over the next few years.
