In addition to growing vegetables and fruits, the LED plant factory has now expanded its capabilities to cultivate edible roses. According to recent reports, Professor Yu Cong'an from the Department of Molecular Biotechnology at Da Hwa University in Changhua County, Taiwan, led a team of students to successfully grow edible roses within an LED-controlled environment. This innovative method ensures consistent quality and eliminates the need for pesticides, offering a safer option for consumers.
Professor Yu explained that many restaurants use flowers as decorative elements on their plates. While these are often just for aesthetics, there is always a desire for food safety. To address this, he initiated the project to grow flowers using the LED plant factory, providing a more secure and healthy alternative for the culinary industry. The experimental variety currently being tested is the Bulgarian rose, which is known to be edible.
Once the tissue culture seedlings are placed on the shelves, the first bloom can appear within one and a half to two months. After harvesting, the plants can be re-harvested every 2 to 3 weeks, making it a sustainable and efficient production model. The flowers can be used in various ways—freshly eaten or brewed into flower tea.
Professor Yu added that when harvested during the flowering period, the Bulgarian roses can be used as a natural ingredient in teas or as a fresh garnish. Since the entire cultivation process takes place in a pesticide-free and pest-free environment, consumers can enjoy them with confidence and peace of mind.
This breakthrough not only opens up new possibilities in agricultural technology but also highlights the potential of controlled environment agriculture in producing safe, high-quality food products. As the demand for clean and sustainable food sources continues to rise, innovations like these could play a significant role in shaping the future of food production.
