The IEC 60598-2-5 standard outlines specific safety requirements for floodlighting luminaires. It applies to fixtures used with tungsten filament lamps, tubular fluorescent lamps, and other gas discharge lamps operating at voltages not exceeding 1000V. This document provides a detailed overview of the structural, mechanical, and environmental requirements that these luminaires must meet.
1. Outdoor floodlights should have a minimum IP rating of IPX3 to ensure protection against water ingress.
2. The lamp holder and light source bracket must be durable enough to withstand normal use throughout the luminaire's lifetime. They should accommodate light sources within standard dimensional tolerances and securely fix them in the designed position.
3. If the design allows for different-sized light sources or positions, there must be clear adjustment mechanisms and secure locking features.
4. Refractors, reflectors, or other optical components must be clearly marked or structured so they can only be installed correctly during maintenance or replacement.
5. The mounting method should be appropriate for the weight of the luminaire to prevent structural failure.
For floodlights mounted above ground level, the connection points must withstand wind speeds up to 150 km/h without visible damage. The fixing mechanism must also prevent loosening due to vibration, whether during operation or maintenance.
Luminaires installed at heights of 3 meters or more require additional safety measures in case of failure, such as fall protection. These requirements do not apply to rotary joints. Visual inspection is used to verify compliance.
Additionally, floodlights above ground must undergo an extra test. A sandbag load of 2.4 kN/m² is placed on the maximum projection surface for 10 minutes. Afterward, the fixture is rotated 180° around its joint, and the process is repeated. During this test, no damage or deformation greater than 1° should occur.
6. If the luminaire includes an adjustable angle feature, it must have a locking mechanism to secure the position after adjustment.
7. Outdoor floodlights must be able to withstand typical vibrations encountered during normal use.
8. The glass cover must break into small pieces or be protected by a fine mesh or laminated glass to prevent injury from sharp fragments.
For luminaires with an IP rating higher than IP20, testing should follow the procedures outlined in Chapter 12, 12.4, 12.5, and 12.6 of GB7000.1. These tests are conducted after the procedures specified in Chapter 9 and 9.2 of the same standard. The provisions of Chapter 12 of GB7000.1 are applied, but modified according to the guidelines in this standard.
When testing outdoor floodlights, the temperature inside the test hood should be reduced by 10°C to account for natural air flow effects. This ensures accurate thermal performance evaluation under real-world conditions.
