I had never been much into hobbies, but I did enjoy spending my free time shopping online. I had purchased quite a few quality digital products over the years and always assumed the process would remain smooth. Unfortunately, I recently fell victim to a scammer who nearly got the better of me.
I decided to share my experience in this post to warn others about the risks involved with free listings. You see, my home router's signal had been poor for some time, and I had been eyeing the Xiaomi Router Pro for quite a while. At 499 yuan, it was a bit pricey for a wireless router, especially when you could get a TP-Link for under a hundred.
Then I spotted a second-hand Xiaomi Router Pro listed on the free-fish platform for only 300 yuan. The seller claimed it was practically new, with the original box, instructions, and receipt included. They even sent me clear pictures of the item. Usually, one of the first rules of avoiding scams is to steer clear of anything suspiciously cheap, but this price seemed reasonable enough, so I went ahead with the purchase.
The seller shipped it out the day after I placed the order, and it arrived two days later. When I saw the small parcel, I immediately suspected something was off since the Xiaomi Router Pro is quite large and should have come in a much bigger box. Still, I opened it right there in front of the courier.
Inside, I found what appeared to be a used broken router. It reeked of mildew, and the hands clearly showed signs of wear and tear. This wasn't even a high-quality fake; it looked like something you'd find on a street vendor's stall, worth maybe a few dozen dollars at most. I couldn’t believe it—this was clearly a scam!
Thankfully, I had taken precautions by taking pictures of the entire unboxing process, including the courier and package details. I immediately reported the incident to the platform and requested a refund. The scammers tried to argue their case, but with solid evidence, I managed to secure my refund.
This experience taught me the importance of staying vigilant, especially when purchasing second-hand items online. Always document everything and use the platform’s protection measures to your advantage. It’s unfortunate that scammers exist, but we need to ensure platforms like these remain safe spaces for transactions.
In the end, I reported the scammer to the authorities and hope this serves as a warning to others. Remember, free-fish is just a platform—it’s up to us to stay cautious and protect ourselves. If anyone has any advice on dealing with couriers who leave packages outside our homes, I’d love to hear it. Let’s work together to make online shopping safer for everyone!
