Power battery recovery wind blows immediately. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has focused on green development.

In a recent update, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the second batch of green manufacturing lists, highlighting significant progress in sustainable industrial development. This list includes 16 green factories focused on power battery-related products, three types of eco-friendly design products such as lead-acid batteries, and one model company recognized for its green supply chain management. These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to environmental responsibility across the industry. The image below illustrates the list of green factories related to power battery fields, showcasing the expanding network of environmentally conscious manufacturing sites. As part of broader efforts to promote green development, the focus is on building more green factories and industrial parks, accelerating the supply of green products, and demonstrating effective green supply chain management. These steps are just the beginning of a larger movement toward an ecological and sustainable industrial system. The Ministry also issued the "Key Points for Industrial Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilization in 2018," emphasizing the importance of green development in advancing China's manufacturing capabilities and environmental protection. The policy highlights the need to accelerate green manufacturing projects, deepen pilot programs, and strengthen energy conservation and environmental measures. Industries like green manufacturing, clean production, and clean energy will see increased oversight, aiming to reduce resource consumption, improve standards, and drive the transformation toward greener practices. According to the key points, the goal is to reduce energy consumption per unit of industrial added value by over 4%, lower water usage by 4.5%, and enhance the comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste and cleaner production levels. These targets demonstrate a strong commitment to embedding green development principles into the industrial sector. Battery China.com notes that the focus on recycling new energy vehicle power batteries is not only a key driver for green development but also an essential outlet for managing end-of-life batteries. With the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market since 2014, the number of power batteries in use has surged. By 2017, the total installed capacity reached 36.27 GWh, with cumulative installations from 2014 to 2017 exceeding 80 GWh. Given the 5-8 year lifespan of lithium-ion batteries, the market for recycling these batteries is expected to reach a peak soon. Currently, power battery recycling is divided into two main approaches: cascade utilization and resource recovery. While cascade use faces challenges due to high dismantling costs and technical limitations, resource recovery has developed a more stable business model. It’s estimated that the used power battery recycling market will reach 5 billion yuan in 2018, and by 2020-2023, it could grow to between 136 and 311 billion yuan. Since 2016, the government has introduced several policies to regulate power battery recycling, including the "Recycling and Utilization Technology Policy for Electric Vehicle Power Batteries" and the "Recycling and Dismantling Specification for Vehicle Power Batteries." In the latest policy, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced plans to issue temporary measures for managing the recovery and utilization of power batteries, aiming to establish a robust recycling system. Battery China Network believes that after years of rapid growth, the power battery industry is entering a more mature phase. With the national push for green development, the recycling sector is on the verge of significant expansion. Initiatives such as the establishment of a standard system, large-scale demonstration projects for cascade utilization, and the formation of regional environmental coalitions are paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient recycling model. The coming years are expected to bring a surge in power battery recycling activity, much like the earlier boom in lithium battery markets. Author: Caowu Jia
