In recent years, LED lamps have gained popularity due to their energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and longer lifespan. As a result, they have gradually replaced traditional lighting products, leading to a significant increase in market share. China has become the world's largest producer of lighting products. However, as the industry grows, so do concerns about product quality.
Recently, the Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reported that three Chinese-made LED lamps were recalled by the European Commission’s non-food rapid warning system. The issue was related to insufficient electrical insulation between live parts and accessible metal components, posing a risk of electric shock to users.
Both products did not meet the requirements of the European Union Low Voltage Directive and the EN 60598 standard. Another brand, "Party Lighting," contained short-chain chlorinated paraffins, which are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. The concentration reached 1.1%, far exceeding the EU regulations on persistent organic pollutants.
Experts from the Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau noted that while China's LED industry has grown rapidly, forming a large-scale production base with significant market potential, challenges remain. Issues such as limited core technologies and an unorganized industrial structure continue to hinder international competitiveness.
After years of fast growth, export volumes began to slow down starting in 2015. In 2016, exports reached $10.6 billion, a slight decrease compared to the previous year. However, 2017 saw a rebound with exports reaching $12.2 billion, a 10% increase. Despite this, the number of exporting companies increased significantly, but the top 30 exporters accounted for only 24.21% of total exports, indicating a fragmented market.
According to experts, developed countries like the U.S. and Europe frequently recall Chinese LED products. Analysis shows four main quality issues:
First, poor waterproofing leads to internal damage, especially in outdoor models.
Second, inadequate protection against electric shock due to design flaws and structural risks.
Third, wiring issues can cause shocks, fires, or falls, endangering users.
Fourth, the presence of toxic substances violating foreign regulations.
The Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau advised that foreign markets are becoming more demanding in terms of quality and functionality. Low-cost, low-quality products struggle to retain customers or remain profitable. With the industry moving toward integration, it is essential for manufacturers to focus on quality improvements.
Exporters should stay updated with international standards and improve quality throughout the supply chain, from design to production. Collaboration with inspection agencies and industry groups is also crucial to avoid recalls and enhance the global reputation of “Made in China.â€
