What Are the Frequent Causes of Domestic LED Recalls?
Release date: 2018-02-22 Source: Guzhen Lighting News
In recent years, LED lamps have gained popularity due to their energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and long lifespan. As a result, they are gradually replacing traditional lighting solutions. China has become the world’s largest producer of lighting products, with the LED industry continuously expanding. However, despite this growth, some quality issues have raised concerns among consumers and international markets.
Recently, the Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reported that several Chinese-made LED lamps were recalled by the European Commission’s non-food rapid alert system. The issue involved insufficient electrical insulation in the “ATOPSUN†and “GT Industrial†brands, which posed a risk of electric shock to users. These products did not meet the EU Low Voltage Directive or the EN 60598 standard. Another brand, “Party Lighting,†was found to contain harmful short-chain chlorinated paraffins, which are known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. The concentration reached as high as 1.1%, violating the EU regulations on persistent organic pollutants.
Experts from the Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau noted that while China's LED industry has grown rapidly, forming a large-scale production base with significant market potential, challenges remain. Issues such as weaknesses in core technologies and a fragmented industrial structure continue to hinder international competitiveness. Despite this, exports saw a slight decline in 2015, followed by a modest increase in 2016 and a more substantial rise in 2017.
According to experts, developed countries in Europe and the U.S. frequently recall Chinese LED products each year. After analyzing these recalls, four main quality issues were identified:
First, poor waterproof performance leads to internal damage when exposed to moisture. This is common in outdoor LED lamps.
Second, inadequate protection against electric shocks due to design flaws, structural risks, or faulty cable insulation that may lead to fires.
Third, wiring issues inside and outside the product can cause electric shocks, fires, or other injuries, endangering consumer safety.
Fourth, the presence of toxic substances that do not comply with foreign regulations, leading to recalls.
The Jiangsu Inspection and Quarantine Bureau urged export companies to stay updated with international standards, improve product quality through better design, sourcing, and manufacturing, and focus on enhancing the reputation of “Made in China.†By learning from past mistakes and prioritizing quality over price, Chinese manufacturers can strengthen their position in the global market.
