From tricks to tricks: washing machines have grown rapidly in 30 years

In a recent episode of CCTV's "Consumer Proposition," titled "The New Look of the Old Three," the show delved into the evolution of China's manufacturing sector over the past three decades. The focus was on the so-called "three major pieces" — televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines — which once symbolized the aspirations of Chinese households during the early years of reform and opening up. Back in the 1980s, these appliances were considered luxury items. However, they were far from perfect. TVs were black and white, with limited functions; refrigerators had poor cooling efficiency and high energy consumption; and washing machines were known for their loud noises and shaking, often causing disturbances to neighbors. These early models were not only inefficient but also inconvenient for daily use. Fast forward to today, and the landscape has changed dramatically. The quality and performance of Chinese-made consumer goods have significantly improved, with many products now leading the global market. One standout example is the modern washing machine, which has undergone a complete transformation in both design and functionality. Thirty years ago, the sound of a washing machine running was a common household annoyance. Traditional models were noisy, vibrating excessively, and could even "dance" on the floor if not properly secured. This issue stemmed largely from the motor technology used at the time. Most washing machines relied on belt-driven motors, which caused instability and excessive noise. To address this problem, companies like Haier began exploring new technologies. They introduced direct-drive inverter motors, which eliminate the need for belts and reduce vibration and noise significantly. This innovation not only improves user experience but also sets a new standard for quiet and efficient laundry solutions. In an impressive demonstration featured on "Consumer Proposition," Haier showcased the remarkable stability of its direct-drive washing machine. During a test, 39 champagne glasses were placed on top of the machine, and after it was turned on, none of the glasses moved or fell. Even the wine inside remained undisturbed, proving the machine's exceptional quietness and stability. Another key advancement is the ability of these washing machines to handle delicate fabrics. In the past, high-end clothing such as silk and cashmere needed to be washed by hand to avoid damage. Today, Haier's direct-drive technology allows for gentle, precise washing that mimics hand-washing. A test using two identical napkins demonstrated this: one washed in a traditional mode was torn apart, while the one washed in the soft cradle mode remained intact. Haier's commitment to quality has earned it a strong presence in the market. According to recent data, during the National Day holiday, drum washing machines saw significant sales, with Haier's models capturing 16.5% of the market share. Among the top 10 models in the industry, six were Haier direct-drive washing machines. Beyond domestic success, Haier's washing machines are now available in over 50 countries and regions worldwide, including many European markets. With millions of satisfied users, the brand has become a symbol of China's technological advancement and global competitiveness. Over the past 30 years, the evolution of washing machines has gone from being simple tools to high-tech, user-friendly appliances that enhance everyday life. No longer just "playing tricks," modern washing machines now deliver premium experiences, reflecting the growth and innovation of Chinese brands on the world stage.
