Sharp's new Tiger Zenigata LED array with color temperature function

The color temperature adjustment capability of white LED lamps is beneficial for many applications. A common method of achieving adjustable color temperature is to equip different LED arrays, such as hybrid cold and warm white LEDs. These LED chips are separately controlled to enable adjustment of each set of LED outputs while in turn changing the mixed light color temperature of the fixture.

Sharp's new approach is to create a small LED module - the Tiger Zenigata array, while emitting hot and cold white light. The Tiger Zenigata array can be adjusted from 2700K to 5700K. Depending on the color temperature, the module emits a luminous flux of 1900 lm to 2200 lm, consuming approximately 25 W of power. Sharp said the array can achieve high CRI values up to 94 cool white and 92 warm white.

The Tiger Zenigata LED arrays come in different phosphor strips and offer small packaged LED sources with adjustable color temperature. The array has a total of 168 blue LED chips coated with different red and green phosphor blends to create a cool white component. The alternating strips are interconnected in two separate circuits. The circuit of the 2700K component consists of 96 chips arranged in eight parallel strips, each with 12 LED chips. The 5700K optical component consists of 72 chips arranged in 6 parallel strips.

A power supply with a maximum current of 700 mA provides a forward voltage of 37V per circuit. Any color temperature between 2700K and 5700K can be achieved by varying the current of each circuit from 0-700 mA.

The array has a light-emitting surface diameter of only 17 mm and has the optical properties of a point source. This simplifies the optical design process of the illumination device and prevents the formation of multiple shadows that may occur with multiple point sources.

The Tiger Zenigata is a small package like the Sharp Mega Zenigata LED array. The main difference is that Tiger has four contacts (two circuits) instead of the usual two. Sharp said it should be easy to adapt to existing luminaire designs that use fixed color temperature arrays, enabling them to have color change capabilities.
