Rohde collaborates with Schwartz and Gemalto to minimize LTE

On February 26, 2018, at the Mobile World Congress in Munich, the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) was highlighted as a game-changer for key industries. The 5G new radio (NR) technology enables data speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s or more, achieved by utilizing wider bandwidths—up to 100MHz in the sub-6GHz range and up to 800MHz in the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. However, signal attenuation is a challenge in these high-frequency bands. To address this, advanced antenna arrays with narrowband beamforming help minimize signal loss. As a result, traditional conduction testing is gradually being replaced by air interface (OTA) testing, which offers more accurate and efficient performance evaluation. At the 2018 event, Rohde & Schwarz showcased its comprehensive 5G NR test solutions for both the 6GHz band and millimeter wave frequencies. While many network operators continue to rely on their existing LTE infrastructure, the company also emphasized its ongoing development of 4G technologies, presenting the latest 4G test solutions. This approach helps operators maximize revenue from current networks while preparing for the transition to 5G. One of the key products on display was the R&S CMP200 wireless communication tester, designed for 5G NR OTA measurements in the 28 GHz and 39 GHz bands. It features an IF unit and remote radio heads (RRHs), allowing users to position RRHs close to the OTA test chamber, reducing cable losses during testing. The solution also includes the R&S ATS1000 antenna test system, along with accessories like the Vivaldi antenna and the R&S NRPM OTA power measurement system, providing a complete millimeter wave OTA testing setup. For lower frequency bands, such as 6GHz and below, the R&S CMW100 line tester was introduced. This advanced device supports 5G NR transmit and receive measurements and is fully compatible with 2G, 3G, 4G, WLAN, and Bluetooth® technologies. With a simple software key upgrade, users can unlock the latest 5G test capabilities. Another notable demonstration was the R&S CMWflexx test solution, designed to verify support for 3GPP Release 13 Enhanced Carrier Aggregation (eCA) features. This solution enables testing of a terminal's ability to handle eight downlink carriers simultaneously. It consists of two R&S CMW500 broadband wireless communication testers, making it ideal for LTE-A Pro 8CA validation. Rohde & Schwarz presented all these innovations at Hall 6C40 during the Mobile World Congress from February 26 to March 1, 2018, highlighting its leadership in next-generation communication testing.
