LG Poland builds Europe's largest lithium battery plant for 100,000 vehicles
[TechWeb Report] On October 13, according to foreign media reports, LG has announced the construction of the largest electric vehicle battery plant in Poland, located near Wroclaw. This strategic location is close to the German border, a region known for its strong automotive industry. The LG Chemical division plans to open this facility in 2019, with an initial target of supplying lithium batteries for 100,000 electric vehicles annually starting from 2020.
This move highlights the growing importance of battery production as automakers worldwide transition toward electric and hybrid vehicles. In comparison, Panasonic's latest battery plant in China can support the production of around 200,000 vehicles per year. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Gigafactory, currently one of the most advanced in the world, aims to eventually produce up to 500,000 vehicles annually. According to Elon Musk, the current capacity of the Gigafactory surpasses that of any other factory globally.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, battery manufacturing will play a crucial role in the future of the automotive industry. While expanding production facilities is essential, the availability of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel could become a greater challenge. Experts suggest that securing a stable supply chain will be just as important as building new factories in the coming years.
The expansion of battery production is not only a response to market demand but also a strategic move by companies like LG and Tesla to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving EV landscape. With governments around the world pushing for greener transportation, the race to build more efficient and sustainable battery technologies is heating up.
