Global microgrid enabling technology spending totaled nearly $112 billion in 2026
A recent report from Navigant Research highlights that by 2026, global spending on microgrid enabling technologies is expected to reach nearly $112 billion. This growth reflects the increasing importance of microgrids in modern energy systems, particularly as more organizations seek to enhance grid resilience and integrate renewable energy sources.
Microgrids have become a key solution for managing and optimizing distributed energy resources (DER). They offer enhanced reliability and stability at the distribution level, helping to streamline the integration of various energy sources. With advanced control systems, microgrids can deliver value both at the local level and for the broader power grid, making them a versatile and essential component of future energy infrastructure.
Peter Asmus, chief research analyst at Navigant Research, emphasized that "microgrids are a crucial part of the emerging energy cloud, offering grid self-healing capabilities and seamless integration of renewable energy." He added that the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of microgrids make them an attractive option for both urban and remote areas.
According to the report, biomass, combined heat and power (CHP), diesel, fuel cells, hydropower, solar photovoltaics, and wind energy will dominate microgrid spending by 2026. These technologies will form the backbone of microgrid systems, maximizing on-site generation and reducing reliance on centralized grids.
In 2017, cogeneration was the leading technology for microgrid installations, with 655 MW deployed throughout the year. Solar PV and diesel followed, with 392 MW and 385 MW installed respectively. However, the landscape is set to change significantly by 2026.
The report predicts that solar photovoltaic microgrids will see a massive increase, reaching 3,786 MW by 2026. Energy storage applications for microgrids are also expected to grow substantially, with around 3,292 MW of capacity anticipated. This shift underscores the growing role of solar and storage in shaping the future of decentralized energy systems.
